Salvador, Bahia

Salvador da Bahia is located along the Bay of Todos os Santos in Brazil and was built upon a crest line parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, making it easy to defend against attack. It is an example of Renaissance urban planning principles adapted for colonial sites--Lisbon being the principal example of Portuguese colonial cities from which others were derived--in that the city was built on two levels: the upper level with residential and administrative buildings placed on hills that overlook the forts, docks, and warehouses on the beaches of the lower city.
