Itaparica at a glance



Itaparica is the biggest island of Bahia de Todos os Santos (Bay of All Saints which is the bay of Salvador that gives the name to the state of Bahia), and can be reached by boat. Itaparica has many nice and quiet beaches that are ideal for families or to have fun with friends inside the water. once there you can visit the Historical Centre with the churches of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, São Lourenço and Santíssimo Sacramento, the São Lourenço Fort, the Solar del Rey (a former whale meat factory that got its name because in the XIX Century first hosted João VI, and later his son Pedro I and grandson Pedro II), the Fonte da Bica (believed to be a fountain of youth because of its medicine water) and the Centro Artesanal, where you can buy fine local craftsmanships and souvenirs. another great tour is to the nearby smaller Frades island, site of many fascinating stories. on your way back to mainland you can also visit the São Marcelo Fort, one of the most important of the ancient system of fortifications of Salvador.
